School Nurse: Leigh Ann Garrison, RN, MSN

Medical Conditions And Medication at School:

At the beginning of the year, you will be asked to complete an emergency card for each of your children. This is our way of knowing any medical condition that your child has and also provides us with your permission to have your child transported and treated in the emergency room if necessary and in the event of an emergency. It is your responsibility to keep your contact information updated throughout the year. If your information changes, you accept a new job or you decide to only use a cell phone or your emergency contact people change their information, please call, email, or write a note to the office and let us know. You may also want to complete another card. This will ensure we have the proper information to reach you in case of an emergency.

If you know your child has a medical condition that will require assistance while at school, please contact the clinic. These might include diabetes, asthma, severe allergies, or seizures, for example. You will be asked to have a health treatment plan completed by your doctor, which will provide us a plan of action to follow that will be consistent with what you and your doctor are already doing for your child. If your child will require medications while at school, PWCPS requires the proper forms be completed. All medication must be provided and transported by the parent or an adult.  The forms are available on the school website or can be picked up in the clinic.

At Mary F. Williams Elementary we aim to foster healthy lifestyles.  Food Services has revamped their menus in the past few years to offer more choices of fruits and vegetables and whole grain items. Now, we look to you to help us.

Children love to celebrate their birthdays at school and we want them to have their special day, too. But instead of sending high calorie, sometimes very large portioned snacks, we encourage you to send something nutritious or an alternative to a snack.  Some alternatives to a snack are pencils, erasers, stickers, or donating a book or other item to school in honor of your child.  Please contact the school nurse for a list of healthy snack alternatives.

Please make note that any snack item that is sent in for celebrations must be store bought and must have the nutrition/ingredient label intact.  Absolutely no home-made items will be accepted.  This is to ensure the safety of our many children with food allergies and other health conditions.

Be a role model for healthy habits!

Illnesses like the flu (influenza) and colds are caused by viruses.  The main way that illnesses spread is from person to person in respiratory droplets from the cough and sneezes of an infected person.

How to Help Stop the Spread of Germs

Take care to:

  • Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough
  • Clean your hands often
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
  • Stay home when you are sick and check with a health care provider when needed
  • Practice other good health habits (good nutrition, exercise & rest)

 Handwashing

When available, wash your hands -- with soap and warm water -- then rub your hands vigorously together and scrub all surfaces. Wash for 15 to 20 seconds. It is the soap combined with the scrubbing action that helps dislodge and remove germs.

When soap and water are not available, alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers may be used. You can find them in most supermarkets and drugstores. If using a gel, rub the gel in your hands until they are dry. The gel doesn't need water to work; the alcohol in the gel kills germs that cause colds and the flu.*

Student Illness

Parents/guardians we ask that you pick their child up your ill child in a timely manner (within 30-45 minutes) when notified by the school that your child is ill.

Reasons for which a child may be sent home from school or for parent to keep child home include:

Prince WilliamCountySchool Regulation 758-1: Illness or Injury Exclusion Criteria

  • Fever of 100 F and over – exclude until student has been fever-free for at least 24 hours.
  • Conjunctivitis (pink-eye), strep infections, ringworms, and impetigo are all infections and must be treated with medication for a minimum of 24 hours before returning to school. Please do not allow affected students back before this time so all other students are not infected unnecessarily.
  • Rash of unknown, origin (especially if accompanied by a fever)
  • Head injury
  • Sever coughing or difficulty breathing
  • Colds - a child with thick or constant nasal discharge should remain home
  • Diarrhea or vomiting - exclude until student has been symptom-free for at least 24 hours
  • Stiff neck associated with a fever and/or a recent injury
  • Inadequate immunizations with known disease outbreak in school

5th Grader Tdap Reminder

The Tdap booster vaccine is required for sixth grade students before the start of school every September. Please give proof of this immunization to your school nurse  once your child turns eleven. If your child has not received this immunization before the end of school in June, you will need to give the documentation to the middle school staff. Meeting this requirement as soon as possible will help your child have a smooth transition to middle school.

Unfortunately, no sixth grade student will be able to attend school until written verification of the Tdap immunization or a Doctor’s note for students with birthdays after Sept 6th is received. These students will be excluded from school in September until immunization requirement is satisfied. Please contact Mrs. Garrison our school nurse, if you have any questions.
