Ron Whitten - Assistant Principal
Dear Williams Families,
Now, with a few weeks of school behind them, I hope your children are coming home talking about their new teachers, about things they are learning in their first days back, and even about new friends.
Did you know it takes a lot to get ready for a new school year? Our custodial staff worked long hours this summer and did an amazing job making certain that the children would have a clean school and classroom waiting for their return. Our teachers and specialists gave up summer time to attend many hours of staff development, to meet with their teammates to plan for instruction, and get their classrooms set up just right. Teachers' assistants have been busily helping with classroom set up, bulletin boards, and much, much, more. The office staff spent their summer hours enrolling many new students; updating school and student records; ordering, receiving, and preparing materials for the new school year; and doing everything they could to assist Mr. Whitten and me. Our cafeteria manager, Ms. Judy worked through summer school and summer SAC and still managed to have our cafeteria spic and span and ready for the first day back. I cannot begin to express how impressed I am with the level of dedication that I witness everyday at Williams Elementary.
I am once again very happy to report to you that MWES students’ SOL scores were strong enough for us to meet both the state and federal requirements for Accreditation and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). CONGRATULATIONS to our rising 4th-5th grade students and to our class of 2009 who met the challenge of achieving benchmark scores that were four points higher than last year’s requirements! Our teachers, kindergarten through 5th grade, did an amazing job preparing the students by implementing the standards and providing remediation when needed. Parental support was also an important factor in this success.
My goals for this school year are that:
- Our school continues to hold high academic and behavioral expectations for students.
- Our teachers continue providing quality instruction that is based on current research and best practice.
- As a community, we will continue working together to establish a culture of shared beliefs and values.
- In SY 2009-10 Williams Elementary will become an even stronger and more effective community of learners.
In closing, I’d like to personally thank you for entrusting your most precious assets, your children, to us. I want you to know that I look forward to working with you and your children throughout this school year to provide a productive and safe learning environment. I’m certain the year ahead will be exciting, rewarding, and filled with great experiences for us all.
Mrs. Jackson, Principal
